Rent FAQs
All tenants are required to pay their rent in advance, either weekly or monthly, as specified in your tenancy agreement. Typically, most social housing tenants pay weekly, while Intermediate Rent tenants pay monthly.
It’s important to keep your rent account paid in advance and avoid falling into debt (commonly known as being “in arrears”).
If you receive Housing Benefit, it is paid 4 weeks in arrears, meaning People Living receives your Housing Benefit 4 weeks after you’ve moved into the property.
We encourage residents, even those on full Housing Benefit, to make regular payments (e.g., £5 per week) to maintain their rent account 4 weeks in credit. This provides greater security in case of any issues with your Housing Benefit and demonstrates your commitment to the tenancy, as paying rent in advance is part of your tenancy agreement.
For those receiving Universal Credit, it is paid directly to you monthly in arrears. Since rent is due in advance, you will need to make additional payments (minimum of £5 per week) until your rent account is fully paid in advance on a monthly basis. Some tenants have the housing cost element of their Universal Credit paid directly to People Living, known as an alternative payment arrangement. If you’d like to arrange this, please contact the Income Recovery team by phone or email, or update your Universal Credit journal to request direct payments to People Living.
